Uprooted: About the Project
As a response to the previous administration, and for my own self-preservation as a Latinx immigrant turned US citizen during the 2016 presidential campaign, I have recently turned to photographing Boston’s community gardens as sites of place-making, contemplation, nourishment, community building, and sustenance. Mirroring the political dimension of immigrant and marginalized populations creating community gardens as places of sanctuary, and with the agency to transform a piece of land from a hostile foreign environment into a communal familiar place, I am photographing these constructed oases as my own act of homemaking, a way to belong to an otherwise demoralizing negation of Latinx life and culture in the US. With this new series, Uprooted, I explore the constructed nature of these sites while witnessing the poignant cycle of life being played out on a daily basis.
